Description

ANCIENT ATHENS KORE SCULPTURE REPLICA A kore (plural: korai ) is a statue of a young woman used to mark graves or, more often, as a votive offering to the gods in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. The word kore means 'young woman' or 'girl' in ancient Greek; it's a word classical archaeologists use to describe this type of Archaic sculpture. This is a quality Greek tourist item was bought from Athens many years ago at a significant cost. The head is painted plaster or similar mounted on a solid grey polished marble base. The patchy paint job is copying the original Kore statues most of which had very little if any paint work left. Several of these female statues were discovered in pieces around The Parthenon in the 19 th century. I believe this replica is a version of either the head of Kore 685 found on the southwest side of the Parthenon in 1888 or perhaps the head of the Peplos Kore found in pieces in 1886 near a temple known as the Erechtheion. Kore 685’s hairdo is typical of the archaic Korai: her hair falls on her back in a heavy mass while long curls frame each side of her face and spill to the front. On her head she wears a stephane, a decorated piece of cloth that wraps around the hair and on her ears, large round earrings. The Peplos Kore is 1.18 metres tall and is made of Parian marble, quarried not far from Athens. A peplos is a type of dress worn by Greek women around 500 BCE. There was no tailoring in ancient Greece – so this particular type of dress was made of a big sheet of fabric, folded over at the top and wrapped around the body. It was pinned at the shoulders to keep it from falling down and often belted at the waist. Like fourteen other korai discovered on the Acropolis, the Peplos Kore had been dumped in a pit as part of the renovations following the Persian destruction of the Acropolis between 480-479 BCE. The Athenian buried these statues on the Acropolis to ensure these broken and damaged dedications remained sacred to Athena but this action also kept them safe for the next 2,500 years for modern civilizations to re-discover how clever were the Ancient Greeks.
