The pen is a fantastically smooth writer. The mechanical pencil is in excellent condition and functions perfectly. The gift case and original Sheaffer Snorkel instructions leaflet are also excellent. Restoration included disassembly, cleaning, replacement of all seals and the sac, smoothing and adjusting the nib, refinishing the plastic, stainless steel, and gold-filled surfaces, filling the pen with ink (not just dipping), and producing multiple writing samples over 2 days (like the ones in the photos). This Version of the Snorkel Sheaffer's White Dot Clipper features a stainless steel cap with gold-filled trim and a palladium silver Triumph nib (80% palladium, 20% silver). Palladium silver is a precious metal that Sheaffer began using in 1933 for the masks on premium gold nibs because of its excellent ink-flow properties. Modern fountain pens with palladium silver nibs sell for about the same price as comparable models with 18k gold nibs. Those who are attracted to gold nibs for gold's inherent value as a precious metal should be aware that palladium has recently sold for as much as $1000-1300 on the spot market.
