Cover: Photo by AFP. THE GULF SHOWDOWN BECOMES A HOSTAGE CRISIS: As American troops and military hardware continued to pour into the Saudi Arabian desert, Saddam Hussein raised the stakes of the gulf conflict by turning it into an ominous hostage crisis. He ordered foreign embassies in Kuwait closed, barred Western diplomats in Baghdad from leaving and released a reel of ghoulish videotape in which he tousled the hair of one of his young British "guests." Uttering the "H" word for the first time, George Bush warned Saddam against harming any detainees, but he was still hoping that the tightening vise of diplomatic and economic pressure would force Iraq to back down before the United States had to use force. NEWSWEEK'S special report analyzes Bush's strategy and gives the latest poll results on his public support, assesses how U.S. and Iraqi forces would stack up if war does break out and explains what last week's call-up of reserves says about America's new part-time Army. It also profiles 36 of the hostages and offers advice on desert warfare from an Israeli general who has fought in two Mideast wars. Special Report: Page 16. A TV SEASON ON THE BRINK: Strangled by cable and outfoxed by Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC are all committed to a fall schedule of risk taking. "Tried and true equals dead and buried," says NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff. NEWSWEEK'S TV critic Harry Waters critiques nine new series that dare to bend the mold, from a cop show set to music to a medical program featuring stool samples. Society: Page 70.
