Description

This is a beautiful bronze “Grand Tour” souvenir bust, "Study of the Venus de Milo." This bust study is a beautifully cast representation of the head & upper torso of the famous full-length marble statue exhibited at The Louvre Museum, in Paris, France. The subject is the iconic Ancient Greek statue of the goddess of love and beauty: Aphrodite (Venus of Ancient Roman times). The bust is in excellent antique condition, with the only condition issues being a small casting-related crack under the left armpit (as shown in the photos) and a newer marble base being affixed to the piece. You can find a single similar bust sold online with the same weak point, attributing them both to the same foundry. The hollow back cast bronze sculpture is mounted on a marble base, and the piece has a consistent and rich dark patination, with very few rubbed high-points. This bust is truly amazing! Cast in Naples, Italy, (c. 1870) an area with numerous foundries who produced bronzes of classical antiquity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries for sale as high-class souvenirs to tourists completing “The Grand Tour” of European culturally historical sites.
